Education

University of Mary Washington Dormitory (Eagle Village)

Fredericksburg, VA

DESCRIPTION

The project consisted of a five-story apartment-style student residences, a mixed-used building, and a pedestrian bridge spanning the Jefferson Davis Highway.

CHALLENGE

Subsurface conditions consist of up to 23 ft of very loose to dense silty sand and sandy clay fill with varying amounts of wood and debris underlain by dense sand and very stiff to hard silty clay. Loading at column and wall foundations range from 15 to 245 kips and 1 to 12 kips plf, respectively. Options consisted of over-excavation of the fill, drive piles or ground improvement of the fill using Geopier® elements.

SOLUTION

Geopier elements were selected as the most economical option to provide foundation support. A total of 677 Geopier elements were installed through the fill to depths ranging from 15 to 20 ft below the bottom of footing elevations to provide increased bearing capacity and settlement control. To provide required uplift capacity, a total of 143 Geopier elements were installed with special uplift anchors. By using uplift Geopier elements, footing sizes (area and thickness) could be optimized since they did not need to be enlarged to resist uplift.
